RI November  Presidential Letter
PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE

JOHN F. GERM
PRESIDENT 2016-17

NOVEMBER 2016
Looking back at the momentous 1917 Rotary Convention in Atlanta, it is difficult to see what could have been contentious about the words of then-President Arch C. Klumph: “It seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world.” Yet, at the time, support for the idea was far from unanimous. Some thought an endowment fund would create more trouble than it was worth. But Klumph’s idea received the support it most needed in the form of an initial donation of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Mo.

Nearly 100 years later, we recognize Klumph’s idea as not only visionary, but revolutionary: It set in place the mechanism that allowed Rotary to become the vast force for “doing good in the world” that it is today.
In many ways, our Rotary Foundation is the foundation of Rotary as  we know it. It has created a mechanism for cooperation and partnership among clubs and between Rotary and other organizations; it has enabled us to  be ever more ambitious in our work and to reach for goals of historic proportions, such as the eradication of polio. It is impossible to quantify the  good that has been done over the last century as a result of The Rotary Foundation. All we can know for sure is that Arch Klumph, if he could see it, would be proud.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you at our international convention in Atlanta: the city where our Foundation was born. I hope a record number of Rotarians will be there to celebrate the centennial of our Foundation. In the meantime, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate! I encourage you to read more about the Foundation centennial at centennial.rotary.org. There, you’ll learn about the history of our Foundation and find ideas for events and projects in your clubs and your community.
One of the most important ways we are celebrating the Foundation centennial is with a fundraising goal of $300 million. Your gift to your Foundation is the best way of ensuring a strong second century for Rotarians Doing Good in the World and for Rotary Serving Humanity.

In addition to her volunteer service in AFJROTC, Courtney has many varied activities as a volunteer at Kingwood Park High School and her community.  Courtney is enrolled in challenging AP and Pre-AP classes.  One of her favorite hobbies is reading.
Courtney aspires to be a lawyer, and she wants to include forensics in her studies as well.  She additionally holds on to a dream of competing in an event in the Olympics in track and field.
Courtney acknowledges that her parents, David and Ismenia Paulson, have played a critical role in her success to date.  She notes that a critical element of success is being organized and always being prepared to handle the unexpected and have the strength to manage it.
The Leader of Tomorrow award is a monthly student recognition program.  There are six awards given out during the year.  Each high school in the Humble ISD school district will have a recipient that is chosen.  Selection of the student is based on characteristics of leadership, academic success, service, and good citizenship.  It will be important for the student to have demonstrated respect to others and the ability to set challenging goals and attain them.  The Humble ISD Police Department representative at each high school will lead the process to select the student on campus.

November is Rotary Foundation Month
Rotary Day at UN
On 12th November, Rotary Day at UN to Highlight Role of Business in Building A Better World

From the United Nations’ earliest days in the aftermath of World War II, the organization’s humanitarian mission has always dovetailed with Rotary’s efforts to administer aid and build peace. This year’s Rotary Day at the United Nations, 12 November, will highlight the role businesses can play in that col...laboration as we work toward a more just and equitable world.

The theme of this year’s gathering at UN headquarters in New York City, “Responsible Business, Resilient Societies,” recognizes Rotary’s role at the intersection of commerce and cause. As leaders in their professions and communities, Rotary members often use their professional skills and networks to advance social causes, particularly economic development.

Christmas Shoe Boxes: Nicaragua
Hi folks,
It is time to begin signing up for our annual trip to Nicaragua to distribute the shoe boxes ( Christmas gifts ) to our students in Nicaragua. Attached are copies of our Trip Letter and Sign-up sheet.
PLEASE note that for the first time we will be going in JANUARY rather than the usual December time for the trip. Because the Nicaragua customs clearance has now three times delayed processing our shipment of the gift boxes which has made them too late for us to deliver them, we have moved the trip to JANUARY to avoid this problem.

I hope that you can plan on going with us this year. Many people have clanged their e-mail addresses and I have not received replacements for them, so please share this trip notice with any one that you think might consider going and also please announce this information to your Rotary Clubs to that more people get the word.
In order to get ALL the information it is necessary to read BOTH attachments.

I am looking forward to seeing you on our trip this year. I will send out a copy of the detailed trip itinerary to all who have signed up after the December 1st deadline for receiving your registrations.

Thanks,
Jim Kite
