Rotary Foundation named World's Outstanding Foundation for 2016

The has recognized The Rotary Foundation with its annual Award for Outstanding Foundation.

The award honors organizations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. Some of the boldest names in American giving — Kellogg, Komen, and MacArthur, among others —are past honorees.

“We are honored to receive this recognition from the AFP, which gives us even more reason to celebrate during our Foundation’s centennial year,” says Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair Kalyan Banerjee. “The continued strong support of Rotary members will help us keep our promise of a polio-free world for all children and enable the Foundation to carry out its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill, and peace. We look forward to another 100 years of Rotary members taking action to make communities better around the world.”

The announcement came on 15 November, known to industry professionals since the 1980s as National Philanthropy Day. The award will be presented in early 2017 at the AFP’s annual conference in San Francisco.

Rotary Foundation Trustee Chair-elect Paul Netzel is set to accept the award on Rotary’s behalf, and Eric Schmelling, director of fund development at Rotary, will speak at the conference. The event is expected to draw more than 3,400 senior-level fundraising professionals from 33 countries.

“While almost everyone is familiar with Rotary, not everyone may realize just how much of an impact Rotary and The Rotary Foundation have had on countless people and communities across the globe,” says Jason Lee, AFP president and CEO. “On behalf of the entire charitable sector and people around the world, all of us at AFP are honored to be able to recognize The Rotary Foundation as our 2016 Outstanding Foundation.”

AFP’s committee of judges cited Rotary’s comprehensive campaign to eradicate polio as a major driver of the selection. They also mentioned that Rotary applies a methodical, purposeful approach to support a wide variety of causes, from providing clean water to educating the next generation of peace professionals.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Marley Morris,Director of Career and Technical Education

The Humble ISD Career & Technical Education Department is part of the Academics Division

What is Career and Technical Education (CTE) ?

CTE courses provide students with opportunities in high school that prepare them to become skilled, productive citizens in their communities.

CTE can be the bridge between high school and post secondary life that encourages academic and career development in local sectors that offer self-sustaining career opportunities.

Their mission is to provide students with business/industry experience as part of their high school curriculum. Students are exposed to a unique combination of classroom instruction and placements in technical work environments where they can acquire new information, concepts, techniques and procedures related to their specific career interests.

The goal is to ensure that students are prepared to succeed in post secondary education and in a world that is increasingly oriented toward highly skilled jobs.

Humble Times to Rising Success

The beginning years of my life were years of seemingly endless change. I moved from house to house, family to family, with no stability until the age of eight, but that's just the life of a foster child. At the age of four I was put into foster care by the state because my parents were deemed unfit to take care of my sisters and me. I remained in foster care as a child of the state until I was eight years old, when I was luckily adopted by my current legal guardians.

Upon getting adopted my new mother sat me down and gave me a life altering talk. She told me that I can become something great and with God I can do anything I wish to and succeed far more than I ever thought. At that moment, my life was forever changed. I became an entirely different person; I was more motivated, outgoing, responsible, and determined. I went from a straight D and F student to straight A and B student in honors and AP classes. I went from being a child with no aspirations in life to a young woman with the world ahead of her. I began setting goals for myself that would push me beyond me limits, for example I had a great desire to attend Texas A&M, I did just that by getting accepted with automatic acceptance in my first choice major. I was renewed and stronger than before. I began to smile more, frown less, encourage others and raise confidence, I was new and great. I began inserting myself in leadership roles that fit me, for example I became the CSM (Command Sergeant Major, third in command) for my JROTC. From the landmark speech from my mom to now I have dedicated my time to ensuring my success and giving back to others.

I began getting very involved in a non-profit organization called Love Fosters Hope. Love Fosters Hope is an organization that hosts many camps and programs for foster children. I volunteer and raise awareness about the foster care system and Love Fosters Hope and also represent foster children, as a veteran, at formal functions and events. I’m also taking actions to extend the awareness to my school through service learning with my JROTC program and attempting to get permission to talk to the entire school about it.

Humble Rotary Presents Millie/HAAM with a check for $500
The Story Behind the Gift:

Dr. Bob & Karen Cassidy have belonged to the same bridge club for over 30 years.  Due to failing health of some of the members, it has finally disbanded.  There was money left in the bridge pot that nobody won, so Dr. Bob got members to contribute to the pot to increase the dollar amount to $250. The bridge group decided they wanted their money to go to HAAM for Christmas presents for kids, so Dr. Bob brought me the funds and asked if I would match it.

I matched their $250 with a matching contribution from the Humble Rotary Club, and presented the $500 check to Millie at yesterday's meeting.
