New District Banner Contest

The 2018-2019 District Governor Carmen Cuneo would like to invite all District 5890 Rotarians to participate in the “New District Banner Contest”.

Our current District Banner has served its purpose for many years now and is in need of either repair or replacement.  DG Carmen Cuneo would like to give each Rotarian in our District a chance to help design a new banner, which will be proudly displayed at all District Rotary events including the 2022 Rotary International Convention in Houston.   The contest will start immediately and the winner will be announced at the District Membership Kickoff on August 16th.

The Grand Prize will be….
One Complimentary District Conference Registration Fee for the 2019 District Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Rules and judging criteria for the contest are as follows:
  1. Rotary International Brand Standards must be followed - Brand standards are available on the RI website
  2. By making a submission you are allowing the rights to be owned solely by  District 5890 and used by  District 5890 exclusively.
  3. The banner must represent Houston, Texas  and all that Houston has to offer the world.
  4. Colors should be restricted no more than 4 different colors (not including white).
We have attached a picture of the old banner for your reference.  The new design will be for the District Banner only, not the district pin.

Please submit entries in PDF form to rosemarym@ymcahouston.org with the Subject Line: Rotary Banner Contest by 5:00 pm on July 31st.

Rotary Club Cartagena de Indias

About two years ago the RC of Humble started a project to reinforce activities of the Cartagena, Colombia Food Bank; together with a DDF from our District 5890. Contributions were obtained from the Cy-Fair RC, the Kingwood RC, District 6000 in Iowa and the RC of Fairfield in Iowa. Local Club was the Cartagena de Indias RC that together with DDF from their District 4271, and RC of Cartagena, RC Cartagena Empresarial also made monetary contributions.  In all and together with matching funds from RI a total of $90,000.00 was put together to finance the project's budget.
The grant was approved 5/19/16.
Since then, the Rotary Club Cartagena de Indias has been actively and effectively working to accomplish the several goals of this Grant. As part of the sustainability required by RI the project was to empower several low income families to learn how to grow vegetables and fruits in their own back yards and to lear how to take their produce to market. Just recently a second wave of training was started, new tools were distributed, seeds ant theoretical and practical instructions given by the National Training Service (NOA to this project).
Picture below at the beginning of the second session of training to 35 families, Rotarians from the Cartagena de Indias RC and people from the town of Arjona (Colombia) that besides tools and seeds also received Rotary T shirts and hats. Second picture is produce obtained during training.
Papaya trees were planted during the first session of training (35 families were beneficiaries of the first session of training).
