From Sustainability to "Shared Value": how modern corporations are addressing climate change
Anja Nikolova, Yale University

Abstract:
"Doing well by doing good" - from theory to practice. Companies worldwide are shifting from philanthropic practices to a remodeled form of corporate social responsibility, known as shared value, to positively impact their bottom line. Unilever, PepsiCo, Walmart, Starbucks, Nike, and LVMH are among the corporations embedding socio-environmental opportunities into their operations and driving business innovation to gain a competitive advantage. From climate change and resource waste to social welfare and supply chain management, companies mitigate their impacts on the latter by recognizing them as market opportunities to better influence a wider global audience rooted in scaled local improvements. This seminar will explore shared value and the triple bottom line of "People, planet and profit", which underpins social equity, economic and environmental benefits, and is increasingly considered the modern goal of sustainability.
